Coach/Referee Relationships:

Have you ever disagreed with a referee’s call – or seen a coach lose their cool over a decision? This section explores the roles and relationships between coaches and referees, aiming to foster mutual understanding and respect to ensure a better game for everyone involved.

Coaches and referees have clearly defined roles:

Coaches are responsible for teaching the game and guiding athletes’ performance.

Referees are responsible for enforcing the rules, maintaining safety, and ensuring fair play.

One key thing to remember: players (and even spectators) often mirror the coach’s behaviour toward officials. Coaches set the tone.

Referees and coaches should respect each other’s responsibilities. Coaches should avoid publicly commenting on officiating decisions, just as referees should not pass judgment on a coach’s methods or capabilities. Both roles aim to provide a positive, high-quality basketball experience – and working together supports that goal.

Tips for Building a Positive Relationship with Referees:

Before the Game:

  • Be familiar with the rules of the game
  • Ensure the scoresheet is completed accurately
  • Introduce yourself to the officials and wish them a good game
  • Clarify any rule questions or concerns in advance

During the Game:

  • Keep your comments focused on your team
  • Avoid visible signs of frustration
  • Speak to officials respectfully – how you'd want to be addressed
  • Use a timeout to ask questions and notify the score bench first
  • Ask for clarification politely if needed

After the Game:

  • Shake hands with the opposing coach
  • Thank the referees and score bench staff
  • Leave the court with professionalism and respect

Keep in mind: referees, like players and coaches, are human. Mistakes happen, but they are never intentional. Officials are doing their best to facilitate a fair and enjoyable game. And remember – chances are, you'll see the same referees again.

Building a positive relationship today benefits your team tomorrow.
